Turning Fragmented Operations into One Digital Direction
Case Study - Industrial Digitalisation & Manufacturing
Creating Alignment Across Complex Industrial Operations
The Challenge
Manufacturing organisations operating across multiple production sites often face increasing complexity as systems, processes, and operational practices evolve independently over time. While individual facilities may function effectively on their own, differences in technology landscapes, working methods, and information structures can make it difficult to create alignment and maintain visibility across the wider organisation.
For Södra Wood, the challenge was to establish a clearer understanding of how operations functioned across sites and create a stronger foundation for future digital development. Achieving this required a structured view of existing capabilities and a way to evaluate opportunities consistently across facilities.
“Creating a shared language across facilities to enable more confident digital decisions.”
The Approach
The engagement began with a comprehensive inventory of resources, assets, technologies, and operational working methods across several production facilities.
To structure and analyse this complexity, the work was approached through an Enterprise Architecture perspective using the ISA-95 standard and visualised through ArchiMate. This created a shared representation of the organisation’s operational and digital environment and introduced a common language for discussing systems, dependencies, and digital maturity across facilities.
Building on this foundation, a portfolio of targeted digitalisation initiatives was developed. Some initiatives focused on improving specific facilities, while others were designed to strengthen consistency and harmonise processes across the wider organisation.
The Outcome
The result was greater clarity around both the current state and future opportunities for digital development.
By establishing a structured view of operations and creating alignment around digital maturity, management gained stronger decision support for prioritising investments and planning future initiatives with greater confidence. The work provided a practical foundation for moving from fragmented development efforts toward a more coordinated digital direction.
